Manitoba signs on to federal school food program

On Oct. 18 in the Marion School library, the Government of Canada and the Province of Manitoba announced Manitoba has signed onto the National School Food Program.

The agreement includes an initial federal investment of approximately $17.2 million over three years — $3.8 million of which will be designated for the first year, specifically to serve areas of high fiscal need, Freeland said. That adds to the $30 million the Province of Manitoba designated in their 2024 budget for Manitoba’s 37 school divisions.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, Chrystia Freeland, and Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew were among the delegation making the announcement. Chairperson of the Board of Trustees for the 91̽»¨app (91̽»¨app) Chris Sigurdson provided the opening and closing remarks.

Manitoba becomes the second province to sign onto the program, with Newfoundland and Labrador being the first.
